Rocket City runs on Redstone Arsenal, NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center, and the defense contractors clustered around Cummings Research Park. Contract work is the norm here, not the exception. Engineers and analysts roll off one program and onto another with gaps in between, and those gaps are exactly where individual health coverage decisions get made.

Many Huntsville households earn contractor salaries that push them past subsidy range, which makes the before-subsidy benchmark the number to plan around. An agent can confirm where your household actually lands; no estimate is a guarantee.
Averages from federal data and our own client base, not quotes. Your price depends on your age, household, income, and plan choice.
Huntsville passed Birmingham to become Alabama's most populous city, driven by aerospace and defense hiring around Redstone Arsenal and a genetics and biotech presence at the HudsonAlpha Institute. Median incomes run well above the state average, and the workforce skews toward engineers, federal employees, and contractors whose coverage follows the contract cycle.

Priya, 38, systems engineer between defense contracts. Her last employer plan ended with the contract. Losing coverage is a qualifying event, so she can pick a marketplace plan now through a Special Enrollment Period, or bridge two or three months with a short-term plan if the next badge is already scheduled.
Tom, 52, independent consultant to arsenal prime contractors. Healthy, high income, no subsidy. A multi-year short-term plan holds an underwritten rate for up to 36 months under current rules. He needs the honest caveat: Alabama has no statute guaranteeing that duration, so the option depends on federal policy staying where it is.
Dana, 27, barista and part-time student. Her income is low, and Alabama did not expand Medicaid. If she earns below the federal poverty level with no dependent children, she may fall into the coverage gap with no subsidy at all. Projecting income accurately matters more for her than plan shopping does, and an agent should walk through that math first.
There is no Alabama statute capping short-term plan duration. The binding limit is federal, and the 2024 federal rule that would have cut these plans to a few months is currently not being enforced per the August 7, 2025 tri-agency statement. That is the only reason 36-month total durations are for sale in Huntsville, and it is worth saying twice: the arrangement rests on federal non-enforcement, so a policy shift in Washington could shorten what new buyers can get. Read renewal guarantees in the contract itself.
Because the state did not expand Medicaid, adults under the poverty line without a traditional Medicaid category can be left without subsidies or Medicaid. That gap is real in Madison County despite the region's high average wages.
Alabama enrolls through HealthCare.gov. Open enrollment runs November 1 through January 15.

Premium data methodology. 1 Marketplace premium averages reflect the average monthly premium before advance premium tax credits, the average monthly premium after advance premium tax credits among subsidized enrollees, and the percentage of enrollees receiving advance premium tax credits, for Alabama, as reported in the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) Marketplace Open Enrollment Period Public Use Files, 2026 plan year, available at cms.gov. Figures are statewide averages across all metal tiers, ages, and household sizes; your premium will differ based on your age, household, income, county, and plan selection.
2 Employer coverage averages reflect the average total monthly premium for single and family coverage at private-sector establishments in Alabama, including both employer and employee contributions, as reported in the Medical Expenditure Panel Survey Insurance Component (MEPS-IC), Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, 2024 tables, available at meps.ahrq.gov. Employee contribution figure reflects the average employee share of the single-coverage premium. Employer plan costs vary by employer, plan design, and firm size.
4 No federal or state agency publishes average premium data for short-term limited duration insurance or fixed indemnity insurance. Where we do not display a client-base figure for these products, it is because we do not have sufficient policy volume in that state to report a meaningful average. Short-term and fixed indemnity products are medically underwritten, are not major medical coverage, are not required to cover pre-existing conditions or essential health benefits, and do not constitute minimum essential coverage under the Affordable Care Act.
5 Medicaid and CHIP are public programs, not insurance products sold by this agency. Premiums are $0 or nominal for those who qualify; eligibility is determined by your state based on income, household size, and other factors. The figure shown describes program design, not an average. Contact your state Medicaid agency or HealthCare.gov to check eligibility.
